The Giant Causeway

No, I have not landed in Ireland, this is the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway, Louisiana. This is the longest bridge over water in the entire world, spanning 23.9 miles from Metairie on the South Shore to St. Tammany Parish on the North Shore.  The original span opened to the public in 1956 as a two way, two lane bridge.  In 1969 a second two lane span opened, substantially increasing the bridge's safety when each span became a one way, two lane route for many commuters.  The parallel spans are 80 feet apart and seven crossovers connect the spans for use as pull-over areas for  emergencies. (The causeway even has its own police force). Each span has a road width of 28 feet. Over 30,000 cars cross the Causeway bridge each workday. There is a $3 toll on one side of the bridge in one direction and it was in the north side…so no toll. As for the lake…technically this 610 square mile body of water is an estuary, not a lake, because it connects to the Mississippi and has salt-water content. It took over 25 minutes constant riding to cross. Nice weather up until I reached here when the heavens opened. Good timing! Now in Forest, Mississippi and heading toward Tennessee tomorrow.
