Route 66 -Shamrock, Texas

Came down the US83 from Garden City through Oklahoma and into Texas. Now
in Shamrock which unsurprisingly is very Irish but for the fact that it is
a dry county....no alcohol! The feature of this town is the tastefully
preserved 'U Drop In' Cafe and Gas Station, a sand coloured Art Deco
masterpiece. The pumps still show 79C per gallon but alas..no gas! You can
also drive 4 miles of the old 66. Talking two guys travelling along Route
66 (or what is left of it) in a cherry red 1966 Ford Mustang. Pics
tomorrow, I hope, when he takes the cover off. Been invited to Austin, TX
to meet one of the friends of Zigy who was a fellow presenter at the HU
Convention in Colorado. Deciding the route as I want to see Lake Texacoma
and Fort Worth. Photos- Unidentified creature (Name it please) 2. U Drop
In Cafe 3. Seasoned Traveller passes on experiences at HU Convention

  1. That would be a prairie dog Tom. they live in colonies of up to several hundred or more.

scourge of cowboys and ranchers as their burrow holes trap unsuspecting horses and cattle - breaking legs, etc.

Scourge also of land developers as the PETA people now insist that they be re-located to "greener pastures" -- and enterprising entrepreneurs have devices that literally suck them out of the ground with large vacuum devices.

If you head to Austin, TX - look for the yellow PD driven by Alaskan CJ as he was headed to Austin himself before heading down to Brownsville for his border crossing into Mexico.

  2. Prairie dogs also known as gophers. Official mascot of the University of Minnesota -- the Fighting Gophers or Golden Gophers or something like that -- no doubt designed to strike fear in the hearts of their opponents.

Forgot to sign my name to the previous post. It's yours truly - Dave G.

P.S. who's that good-looking fellow in the front row of your slide presentation? Not sleeping is he?? Cheers!
